How to Generate a QR Code for WhatsApp, WiFi, Business Cards, and More

QR codes make it instant to share a link, open a chat, connect to WiFi, or save a contact — just by pointing a phone camera. Here's how to create the right QR code for your specific use case.

What Can a QR Code Contain?

A QR code is simply a visual encoding of text. The "text" can be a URL, a phone number, an email address, WiFi credentials, contact data, or any arbitrary string — and the scanning device interprets it based on the format.

QR Code for WhatsApp

A WhatsApp QR code opens a pre-filled chat to your number without the scanner needing to save your contact first. This is perfect for small businesses, customer service, or anyone who wants customers to reach them on WhatsApp with one tap.

The QR code contains a URL like https://wa.me/6281234567890 (replace with your number in international format, no + or spaces). You can also pre-fill a message.

Print the QR code on business cards, menus, flyers, or display it on your counter so customers can scan and chat instantly.

QR Code for WiFi

A WiFi QR code lets guests connect to your network without typing the password. When scanned, Android and iOS both prompt the user to join the network automatically.

The QR code encodes the network name (SSID), password, and security type (WPA2, WPA3, or open) in a standardised format. Scanning it on a modern phone is equivalent to manually entering the WiFi credentials.

Great use cases: café and restaurant guest WiFi, Airbnb and hotel rooms, office visitor networks, and event venues.

QR Code for Business Cards (vCard)

A vCard QR code encodes your contact information — name, phone, email, company, website, and address — in a format that phones can import directly into their contacts app. One scan, and the recipient has your full contact saved.

Adding a vCard QR code to the back of a business card makes the card significantly more useful: digital contact details are saved instantly without manual typing, and there's no risk of the recipient misreading your email address or phone number.

QR Code for a URL or Website

The simplest use case: a URL QR code opens any web address when scanned. Use cases include:

  • Linking from printed marketing materials (flyers, posters, product packaging) to a landing page
  • Linking a physical product to its instruction manual or video tutorial
  • Event check-in or ticket validation links
  • Restaurant menus — scan to view the PDF or web menu
  • Social media profile links on name badges or displays

Tips for Better QR Codes

  • Test before printing: Always scan your QR code with multiple devices (iOS and Android) before mass printing to confirm it works.
  • Size matters: For print, use a minimum size of 2 × 2 cm. For scanning from distance (e.g. a poster), scale up proportionally.
  • High contrast: Black QR code on white background scans most reliably. Avoid placing QR codes on patterned or coloured backgrounds.
  • Error correction: QR codes have built-in error correction. Even if a small portion is damaged or covered (e.g. a logo overlay), the code can still scan.
  • Short URLs scan faster: Shorter content means a less dense QR code, which is easier to scan at smaller sizes.
