How to Upscale or Downscale Image Resolution

  1. Upload your image using the dropzone or file picker.

Upscaling vs Downscaling

Upscaling

Increases the pixel count. The image gets larger but no new detail is added — the tool interpolates new pixels from existing ones. Useful when a platform requires a minimum resolution (e.g. a print shop that requires 300 DPI at 8x10 inches).

Downscaling

Reduces the pixel count. The image gets smaller and often looks sharper because excess detail is averaged. Useful for reducing file size, meeting upload limits, or preparing thumbnails and web images.

FAQ

What is the difference between upscaling and downscaling?

Upscaling increases the pixel count (e.g. 720p to 4K), making the image larger. Downscaling reduces it, making the image smaller and usually sharper. Upscaling cannot add real detail — it interpolates new pixels.

Does upscaling improve image quality?

No. Upscaling adds pixels by interpolation, so the image appears larger but not sharper. It is useful when a platform requires a minimum resolution. For real quality improvement, you need AI-based super-resolution tools.

What is DPI and when does it matter?

DPI (dots per inch) only matters for print. Screen displays use pixels, not inches. Setting 300 DPI is standard for print; 72 DPI is fine for web. Changing DPI does not change the pixel dimensions.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.

Which scaling method should I use?

Use Smooth (bilinear) for photographs — it blends pixels naturally. Use Sharp (nearest-neighbor) for pixel art, icons, or screenshots — it preserves hard edges without blurring.
